They let you upload the images to their server, and I can't imagine google ever making for slow loading...

You can check out the work I'm doing there, even though it is not as complete as this site is. Hopefully it'll be done by Sunday...Please comment if it looks stupid so I can change it.

http://intergalacticresearch.googlepages.com/

You can go nuts over there.

I don't think you can let people leave comments on google pages. I need a comment section for this site (so people can harass me when/if I don't update, so people can request reuploads, and just for convenience). If there is a way to leave comments on google pages, let me know how to insert that function into my homepage...

If no one knows of a good way to leave comments on googlepages, I will simply leave a link to this site for comments...

Please visit. I have made the minimum outline of the site (have not added torrent links, but will). You can pretty much elaborate on where it will go.

I do plan on adding a more critical/in-depth page in Sun Ra studies. This will include the booklist for Ra's course at Berkeley, and links to many of the books. Eventually, and if there is interest, I can upload the outlines and/or notes I made on some of that material.

Suggestions and Updates

It has come to my attentions that "The Overseer" has continued to delete these links, making the empowering tunes of Sun Ra unavailable to most everyone.
Such a galactic travesty cannot take place for long.

The Overseer has left a vacuum. But the music of Sun Ra will rise from these ashes, like a phoenix.

In other words, I'll be reuploading everything (again).
--
I will be doing a significant amount of work on this blog, and also considering moving to Google (the loading time is the main reason I stopped posting updates...blogger is very annoying). Anyone have recommendations?
I don't know html, which leaves me up shit-creek as far as design goes. It is a real shame.
I have also decided I will add links to torrent files. I believe this will aid in the Intergalactic Research Project. I will still use Rapidshare as well.

Thank you for everyone who has responded to requests or posted material. The posts today span from the late 60s into the early 70s. I will put a list of albums needed to fulfill the 1960s discography in a post today or tomorrow, and hopefully people can contribute. Like I mentioned before, I unfortunately missed the previous uploads in the comments section.

Everyone enjoy. I will also be posting links to books on Sun Ra's reading list that can be found online. These certainly helped me understand where Ra was coming from, his background with Egypt and myth, etc. I think this will help in defending my more "academic" approach to Sun Ra--which the very name of my site implies.

Anyone with bootlegs from the 1950s-60s, please post them. It would be excellent. I will soon be posting some bootlegs (I think I have a couple from the 70s).

Thank you everyone for the encouragement and the philosophical questions raised. It is an interesting conversation. And if the debate were to be solved by people who take an interest in music, it would be one thing--but the legal debate will be "solved" by the people who have the MONEY and own the means of production.

Sun Ra and his Astro-Infinity Arkestra (Intergalactic Series II)
Continuation
Editions:
Saturn ESR 520; LP 520 (1969 or 70) (matrix numbers ESR37363NP, ESR29691)

Included Tracks:
Side A:
Biosphere Blues (Ra)
Intergalaxtic Research (Ra)
Earth Primitive Earth (Ra)
New Planet (Ra)

Side B:
Continuation To (Ra)
Jupiter Festival (Ra)

Line-up & Recording Date:
Ra-p, space org (Gibson Kalamazoo org), galactone space instrument (Hohner Clavinet), gong; Kwame Hadi-tp; Akh Tal Ebah-tp, mellophone; Ali Hassan-tb; Marshall Allen-as, Jupiterian fl, picc; Danny Davis-as, acl; Danny Ray Thompson-as, Neptunian libflecto [modified basson]; John Gilmore-ts, cl; Pat Patrick-bs, fl; Robert Cummings-bcl (only in New Planet); Ronnie Boykins-b; Robert Barry-d, lightning d; Carl Nimrod [Carl S. Recently they have been reissued on a double cd CHARLY SNAF818.

http://rapidshare.de/files/34948583/1970-71_Sun_Ra_and_-_The_Solar_Myth_Approach.rar

Some Old and Some New

OK--Here are some reposts of links that were killed, as well as some new material.
Also, if someone could upload the links that were posted in the comments section that I had requested in previous posts, I'd much appreciate it. If all of the ones I've posted are, I haven't really noticed. The fact is, I do not own a single legitimate Sun Ra album.

There is no possible way I could come to the appreciation I have of Sun Ra if I spent money. First and foremost, I have seen 2 Sun Ra albums in my hometown, and the CD of Sun Ra covers at the largest community library. I found a great deal of Sun Ra when I went to Portland, but the minimum price was $25. And that was for 40 minutes of material.
I do not own a credit card so I do not buy anything online.

This comes down the importance I place of aesthetic appreciation. Rapidshare, the piece of crap it can be, allows for a fairly reliable (as far as staying available) way to increase the aesthetic appreciation to a certain audience.

I am also crazy. This means that I believe everyone thinks like me. In my opinion, just because I have the digital copy of a great album does not influence the decision to buy that album. In recent years, there have only been 2 CDs that I bought NEW (and still at a discounted retail price) that I did not have on my computer. On the other hand, I've bought over a dozen used CDs just this year at what I deemed a reasonable price ($1 apiece for numerous Hovhaness symphonies, some Arvo Part, Koyanisqatsi soundtrack, Arnold Bax, Walton, etc.).

Independent record labels are going about this in what I see as the wrong way. If they had a website and offered digital music at $5-7 an album and then Print-On-Demand CDs for $10, there'd be a possibility of me buying a record or two. It just so happens that whatever company bought the CRI record label is offering print on demand CDs for $10 when you buy 10, no shipping and handling--something I plan on doing when I get a real job and have a credit card.

I can go out and buy a DVD 2001 A Space Odyssey for $7 NEW! If I wanted to collect the soundtrack for that movie on outside sources (ie, not buying the soundtrack, but buying a Ligeti album and a Straus CD...), it would be at least 4 if not 6 times that amount.

I am a poor individual and companies will not get my money unless I think they are reasonably priced. I actually think that $7 is a very reasonable price for almost any Stanley Kubrick film. I think $7 is a very reasonable price for a lot of the music I listen to. When I have the income to buy new music, it is $7 per disc (Naxos, or it averages out over the number of discs I buy--like the Hindemith Conducts Hindemith set).

So yes. I will continue to post Sun Ra's music for people like me. If you have the money to spend on this material, you really don't need me to tell you to buy it. That is, if you think like me.

For you Americans, encourage your public libraries--community and colleges--to buy Sun Ra albums for their collection. I don't know if other countries allow the public to make suggestions, but I'm sure that you can across the States.

Sun Ra - 3 froms the 60s

NOTE: A number of albums missing from my collection are coming up chronologically. There are still many good links, at the moment.

I have news for everyone. It is very easy and not time-consuming to share music. This is why tens of thousands of people do it daily--from eDonkey to bittorrent to soulseek to newsgroups.
And yes, there are a few hundred bloggers out there.

How easy is it for me to share music? Well, this simple:

One right click.
One left click.
Type 13 characters.
One left click.
One left click.
One left click.
One left click.

In fact, I would almost guarantee that whoever deleted the links spent more time in front of their computer to delete the files than I did while uploading them (the best part of uploading--you can do it unattended).

Link deletions will not keep me from running this blog. I continue to share via Rapidshare. If I can find people willing to seed torrents for around 1 week (something I cannot do, but many other people would desire), I will upload this material via Bittorrent as well.

And an individual message to the link-deleter: Look (wo)man, someone deleted a few gigs of my uploads before. There was not even a gigabyte on this site.
Someone beat you to it, and did a much more effective job than you did. So why don't you move on and try to suck the tit of misery elsewhere, because you will only find the intergalactic sounds of Sun Ra here...

Two from 1962

Alright, here we go..the first I'm not going to introduce, but it a solid album from the early 60s. Moreover, the recent CD release of Janus only includes material from a 1970 recording session. The original release of Janus included material from 2 sessions, '62 and '70. The albums that are solely the '70 recording session are 'more complete' versions of that session than on the earlier albums.

Sun Ra and his Solar Arkestra
Secrets of the Sun
Editions:
Saturn GH 9954-E/F (probably 1965)
Saturn LP 208

Included Tracks:
Side A:
Friendly Galaxy (Ra)
Ra-p; Al Evans-flg; Marshall Allen-fl; John Gilmore-bcl; Pat Patrick- fl; Calvin Newborn-eg; Ronnie Boykins-b; Tommy Hunter-d.

Solar Differentials (Ra)
Ra-p, gong; John Gilmore- space bird sounds; Ronnie Boykins-b; Tommy Hunter- space birds sounds, reverb; C. Second, the info included in the files states that the recording session of Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy was 1961 or 1962. I'm sticking to the AstroBlack discography and saying 1963.

Art Forms and Dimensions of Tomorrow is an experience. I highly recommend listening to tracks 6 through 11/12 separately from tracks 1-5.. The first track, Cluster of Galaxies, uses feedback or some sort of electronic device to an amazing effect. It is in stark contrast to what was the last track on the vinyl edition, Lights on Satellite.
As far as Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy goes--also a very solid album. Thither and Yon is memorable. After listening to this album last night, and it had been awhile, I liked Voice of Space much more than earlier listens. Maybe it was the mood?

Enjoy.
Sun Ra and his Myth Science Arkestra
Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy
Editions:
Saturn LP 408 (c. 1967)
Thoth Intergalactic (later Saturn) KH 2772
Evidence 22036 (CD, 1992)

Included Tracks:
Side A:
And Otherness (Ra)
Ra-clavioline, cosmic side drums; Bernard Pettaway;btb; Marshall Allen-ob; John Gilmore-bcl; Robert Cummings-bcl; Pat Patrick-bs; Danny Davis-fl; James Jacson-fl, log drums; Tommy Hunter-perc; Clifford Jarvis-perc.

Thither and Yon (Ra)
Allen-ob; Gilmore-sky tone drums; Robert Cummings-bcl; Danny Davis-fl; Pat Patrick-fl; Ronnie Boykins-b; James Jacson-log drums, fl; Clifford Jarvis-perc; Tommy Hunter-perc.

Adventure-Equation (Ra)
Ra-Hammond B-3 org; Marshall Allen-astro space drums; John Gilmore- bcl, sky drums; James Jacson-log drums; Ronnie Boykins-b; reverb.

Side B:
Moon Dance (Ra)
Ra-astro space (Hammond B-3) org; Ronnie Boykins-b; Clifford Jarvis-d.

Voice of Space (Ra)
Ra-astro space org; Danny Davis-as; Ronnie Boykins-b; John Gilmore- sky tone drums; James Jacson-log drums; Clifford Jarvis-d; Tommy Hunter-reverb.

Line-up & Recording Date:
See each track. But with the '92 Evidence release, they decided to couple this with side A of the 'Deep Purple' Saturn LP in '73.
'Deep Purple' includes studio and home recordings from the early 50s--and claims can be made dating the material as far back as 1948. This early Sun Ra is rather historic, and should not be missed. Part of side A will come back when posting one of the two versions of 'The Invisible Shield.'

This CD is extremely important in seeing the beginning of Sun Ra's style. You get glimpses of it in some of the earliest pieces...

I included info for 'Deep Purple' as well.

Sun Ra and his Astro Infinity Arkestra
Sound Sun Pleasure!!

Saturn SR 512 (1970)
Evidence 22014 (CD, 1992)

Included Tracks:
Side A:
'Round Midnight (Hanighen-Monk-Williams)
You Never Told Me That You Care (Hobart Dotson)
Hour of Parting (Schiffer-Spoliansky)

Side B:
Back In Your Own Backyard (Jolson-Rose-Dreyer)
Enlightenment (taken from Jazz in Silhouette) (Ra)
I Could Have Danced All Night (Lerner-Loewe)

Line-up & Recording Date:
Ra-p, celeste; Hobart Dotson-tp; James Spaulding-as; Marshall Allen-as, fl; John Gilmore-ts; Pat Patrick-bs, as, fl; Charles Davis-bs; Ronnie Boykins-b; William Cochran (or Robert Barry)-d; Hattie Randolph-voc (on 'Round Midnight and Back in Your Own Backyard).
Recorded by Alton Abraham, Chicago, 1958.
---------------
Sun Ra and his Arkestra featuring Stuff Smith on violin
Deep Purple
(Dreams Come True)

Editions:
Saturn LP 485 (1973)
Side A has been reissued on Evidence 22014 (CD, 1992)

Included Tracks:
Side A:
Deep Purple (DeRose-Parish)
Sun Ra-p, Solovox; Stuff Smith-vln. It felt very good to read it...There are certainly gaps in my Sun Ra discography, and if any loyal listeners out there want to fill the gaps, please by all means leave a comment under the most recent post or email me at mason.akhnaten@gmail.com. Feel free to post bootlegs as well, as I will be doing this too.

My second comment was one based on confusion due to a posted album cover....
Sun Ra's releases are scattered...The discography is highly confusing...It makes it even worse when CD releases couple two albums, like 'The Nubians of Plutonia' with 'Angels and Demons at Play.'

My goal of this blog is an attempt at chronologically presenting Sun Ra's recordings. I base this on recording date, not on release date. This further complicates things as many albums may showcase a decade of recording...

Should I continue to post potentially misleading album covers? If I do post them, should I explain that there is no way of me verifying exactly which release it came from (Saturn/Impulse/etc). All the artwork I have posted so far may or may not reflect the release being posted.
With no way to verify exactly what album release my MP3s come from, should I continue posting images that reflect only the album and not necessarily the particular release?

Please comment, as I want to avoid confusion. If you do comment, please explain the best way for me to avoid confusion (ie, placing more info under individual posts, writing info in the sidebar, etc.).

Help me with my intergalactic research. Help me share Sun Ra.

Sun Ra and his Arkestra - Jazz in Silhoutte (1958)

Listen to this one before you die...

Sun Ra and his Arkestra
Jazz in Silhouette

Saturn LP 5786 (1958 o 1959) (matrix number K70P3590/ K70P3591)

Included Tracks:
Side A:
Enlightenment (Dotson-Ra) (5:02)
Saturn (Ra) (3:37)
Velvet (Ra) (3:18)
Ancient Aeithopia (Ra) (9:04)

Side B:
Hours After (E.J. The information I've found says this was recorded in '56, then it was released c.1968. However, by 1968, a number of these recordings had been released on "Visits Planet Earth"...Now the Visits Planet Earth release has different lengths for the tracks on the discography sites, begging the question--are they the same versions? My own troubles are further complicated as I only have a partial CD of "Visits Planet Earth"...(or so the discographies lead me to believe).
This is the CD version, as the extra tracks mentioned in the notes are included.

And here's the music:

Sun Ra and his Arkestra
Sound of Joy

Editions:
Delmark DS-414 (1968)
Delmark DD-414 (CD, 1994)

Included Tracks:
Side A:
El Is a Sound of Joy (Ra) (3:50)
Overtones of China (Ra) (3:22)
Two Tones (Patrick-Davis) (3:34)
Paradise (Ra) (4:26)
Planet Earth (Ra) (4:30)

Side B:
Ankh (Ra) (6:30)
Saturn (Ra) (3:52)
Reflections in Blue (Ra) (5:53)
El Viktor (Ra) (2:26)

Only in the cd version:
As you once were (?) I neglect the works of Coltrane, Davis, Parker....
For me, Sun Ra did everything jazz could do. It stands true to this day.

I have just finished listening to every Sun Ra recording I had accumulated. This took a very long time, as I had been accumulating 3 a day at times! And I can wear out on sounds, admittedly. Plus, there is some material by an artist that we like much more than others--so to listen to everything in its entirety....while not a Herculean task, it did stretch my toleration for some jazz.

It will become obvious over the course of this blog what my favorite material is. For example, the address of this blog comes a band that Sun Ra performed with, "Intergalactic Research" and my favorite song I've heard them perform is "Island in the Sun"...not necessarily my favorite song, by any means, but one I've heard dozens of times. The title of this blog is only to draw attention to it, as it is the best known thing Sun Ra has done. I will be proceeding in a chronological order (of what I have)---this opens room for many mistakes, and I will give notes on controversial recording dates.

I would like to thank all the original people who helped me acquire these albums. There is of course one person who, as I said, posted 3 times a day at times. 90% of the collection came from this one individual, and I'm sure he will know who he is.

I find my reviews are generally facile, so they will be kept short. I may self-glorifyingly revel in past moments that I've listened to certain tracks, but I will reserve any criticism (some people may make allegations of Sun Ra not being "at his best", etc.--to each their own, I say).
